I was about 5 years old...
For Mother's Day, Binks, my father (everyone including us kids called him Binks), took the family to breakfast at Jake's little cafè on 4th street. That was a big deal, probably the first time I ever went to a restaurant. Jake's had waitress service.
Breakfast for 11 cents! Back then, "cents" was represented by a "c" with a vertical line through it. (How long since you've seen one of those...?)
One day, I asked Mom how much money Binks made. "About $3-$4 a day, sometimes $100 a month." Binks was the sole provider, married with 2 kids. "WOW!" I couldn't imagine $100; I had never had anything bigger than a penny.
Times have changed. That same breakfast at Jake's today would cost what... $5 (stand in line)? $11 (with service)? Is that same breakfast worth 50-100 times more than it cost then?
When I got my driver's license, gas was 10-11cents a gallon. Today, I pay 30-40 times more. Is that same gas worth 30-40 times more than it cost then?
(Today, people wait 'til the last second buy gas - when they're so low they have to turn off the radio.)
A "dime novel" now costs $10-$20! What's going on here? They call it inflation; it Inflation hits you right in the wallet.
(Some guy stole my wallet the other day... He called up and said, "Man, you gotta get your finances straightened out... credit cards, gas cards, phone cards, all maxed out. I had to use MY phone card to call YOU!")
I used to think rising prices caused inflation!
